Hand held GPS question

I have a hand held GPS (Garmin GPS-76) which is not one with embedded maps. I can customize the screens so they show Ground Speed (very accurate), an Odometer function and the Local (or GMT) time.  Has anyone ever used a GPS like this to run an TSD rally?  I have an external antenna which is magnet mounted to the top of the car so I would be able to see the rather small readout by getting the GPS close to me.

Your thoughts and ideas are appreciated.

This has been discussed at least 2 or 3 times over the last few years on the SCCARoadRally Yahoo group. The concensus is; it's not accurate enough to be competitive on TSD events, esp the more twisty the terrain. A few years ago it was tried on a Adventure rally out of Laughlin. On the TSD section they were all over the place, with nobodys mileage agreeing with anyone elses let alone the rallymasters. Really 40 cars 20 miles down a twisty road gets a wide spread between 19.5 – 20.5 miles. (If they were running real rally computers/odometers the spread would have been only 19.95 – 20.05 at most.)
