Got My New Alpha-elite Rally Computer!

Hey gang,

As I told you previously, I had ordered a new Alpha-elite Rally computer the other day. It came and I am impressed with the quality.

Today I am going to hook it up in my new rally car. It is a brand new car and it will feel a little weird going in to hard wire a rally computer.

I will do a clean installation so no one will know when I am not running a rally.

Pictures later.

About Alfa Elite units, I have owned one for several years. They have some inherent problems. First, the ribbon cable used for hook ups is unreliable, twist it a little and it can short out, leaving you in the lurch. Second, the driver display has a large resistor inside that generates lots of heat. The display is plastic, warp time. Third, the navigator unit can get hot. Also, I do not think there is a fuse protecting the circuits. I had mine redone after it failed on 3 of the first 5 rallies I used it for and had sent it back twice to Alfa to repair. Paul McGaffey and I collobarated. We changed all the wiring set up to computer cables without ribbons. We moved the resistor to the nav box. We put in a small fan in the nav box and drilled holes on the other side, sucking air through the box to cool it. And we put a fuse on the nav box for protection. Haven’t had a failure since, about 4+ years now. If you want to contact Paul and find out about these improvements and the cost, email me. Paul also welded the sensor on the suspension brackets on the left rear wheel for me. He lives in Northridge, CA. Good luck!
