David,
I second your emotion. It WAS a great rally because Justin is not afraid to listen and try new things. Last year I asked him why he had all the cars drive all around Highway 229 and not use one of the most glorious roads in the area. This year, he made it the centerpiece of the rally with Standoff 4, 5, 6, 7 located there. The standoff turned into one of the best rally parties in recent history. We should have set up a bar-b-que there!
I just love the roads in that area, it was a beautiful rally. There are a few things that could improve for next year. 1. Checkpoint one was right at an intersection. If a car pulled up from the right, it could ruin the rally car’s approach to the hose. 2. The workers at SO 11, 12, 13, 14 did not know what to tell us about IN13 when we couldn’t see the light. You ALWAYS have to have a backup plan for that situation. 3. I didn’t like looking all over for IN14. That’s not a Monte Carlos rally, that’s a gimmick trick and we were pretty tired at that point. However, it was kind of neat to see that light tower up close. Also, we found the 4, 5, 6, 7 maze VERY difficult. Even with days to figure it out, it wasn’t until four of us sat at the Graduate and bounced ideas around that we figured it out. THAT’S IT! In every other respect the rally was great!
I did regret not having the Cobra ready for the event. I busted my butt to buy a transmission and try to get it installed in time. But, the yoke from the old gearbox just wouldn’t fit the new one and that was that. In a way, the Jag is a much better car for eating up lots of miles without wearing you out. It’s not nearly as much fun to throw around the curves, though!
One of the most difficult thing to get right on a rally is the timing of the events. It’s really easy to have too much time to kill or too little time to make it to a given point. The timing for Total Recall was impeccible. Even in our slow car, things flowed very smoothly. Great job team!
That Graduate Restaurant looks like a great place to spend a Saturday night. I have to take the wife up there one weekend. Does anyone know if the name has anything to do with the movie?
